Mac Presents 10 Films To Get You Through The Rest Of The Year
The year is almost half over, some major films have already opened, and you may be asking yourself “Self, what is my purpose in life after July 1st?” Well, fear not! I have some good reasons for you to not jump off that ledge.
1) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire- November 22nd
Bet you forgot that another Hunger Games film comes out this year. After the first one defied industry predictions and opened to 152M on its way to a 408M total domestically, the bar is set so high for the sequel, it’s going to be near impossible for it to reach the bar. So, you should definitely stick around and see if the sequel meets expectations, or disappoints.
2) OldBoy- October 25th
Spike Lee directs this remake of the beloved korean masterpiece. Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sharlto Copley star, and Lee is hoping to get some awards buzz.
3) Saving Mr. Banks- December 13th
Based on the True Story of Walt Disney’s acquisition of the beloved story, and how the movie almost didn’t happen. Tom Hanks (who also has a much buzzed about performance in Captain Phillips) returns to form here, with Colin Farrell, Emma Thompson, and Paul Giamatti.
4) Jack Ryan- December 25th
Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, and Keira Knightley star in the Jack Ryan reboot, from director Kenneth Branaugh. It may not win any awards, but it certainly will be a lot of fun.
5) Twelve Years A Slave- December 25th
Not quite the “Christmas” type of film, but definitely an Oscar contender. Steve McQueen (Shame) directs Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Paul Giamatti, and Quevenzhane Wallis in this buzzy civil-war era epic. The story is based around Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), a free man who is tricked, captured and then sold into slavery for twelve years.
6) Anchorman: The Legend Continues- December 20th
This will either appeal to you, or it won’t. But if it DOES appeal to you, then congratulations on getting a sequel to your favorite movie. Will Ferrell and the gang are back, and they’re looking to take the world of 24/7 Cable News by storm.
7) The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug- December 13th
OK, so the first one wasn’t as good as the original trilogy. That won’t stop the fans of the Hobbit from rushing to the theatres to continue to see their favorite novel be fully realized on the screen. At least the special effects are amazing, and I’m sure there will be more action in this second film.
8) August: Osage County- November 8th
Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Dermot Mulroney, Juliette Lewis, Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, and Julianne Nicholson bring to life the Tony Award Winning play. John Welles (ER) directs.
9) Thor: The Dark World- November 8th
More Thor, this time… not in the summer. Marvel is hoping to open their superhero pic outside of the summer. One wonders if Thor can carry the same weight at this time of year. Chris Hemsworth’s star continues to rise, so anything is possible.
10) The Wolf Of Wall Street- November 15th
Leonardo DiCaprio reteams with Martin Scorsece for this adaptation of the best-selling novel, and this time he’s brought along Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, and Kyle Chandler. The preview looks fantastic. This should be another solid awards contender.
and oh yeah…
11) Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas
Because Madea has run out of things to do, except celebrate holidays. She’s now like Ernest.
