Countdown to the Finale: 10 Best Moments From 7 Seasons of True Blood
They say that at the end you always start to think about the beginning. So as the series draws its final breaths, I feel it’s appropriate to look back at some of the most startling, salacious and sensual moments that kept us coming back for more. While it can still be streamed through a variety of websites online and from HBO Go, we’ll still miss everyone from Bon Temps and their special breed of bloodlust when new episodes stop airing. Here, in no particular order, are 10 of the most memorable moments from True Blood.
1. Sookie’s First Dream of Eric:
Even during momentary lulls in the plotline, True Blood has always been able to reel us back in with some interesting intercourse. Sookie and Eric’s relationship – always forbidden, and therefore by the laws of nature, always super hot – has had its share of ups and downs, and not just in the bedroom. Their love story, whether real or imagined, has been one of the shows major draws. Eric, the perceptive vampire that he is, knows Sookie has a strong capacity for love, and she in turn recognizes his own strength of will and character. The dream sequence is sexy but conflicted. Lovin’ ain’t easy when you’re courting an immortal.
2. Bill and Sookie in the Graveyard:
When Sookie takes flowers to Bill’s grave in the first season, she encounters a surprise. Bill isn’t dead! Quite the opposite in fact; he’s well enough to initiate a hot graveyard romp and soon the two are doing a rated-R version of the Monster Mash between the headstones.
3. Eric Kills Russell:
When Russell is high on fairy blood, he’s momentarily distracted – giving Eric a chance to sneak up on him and stab him with a stake. After holding a 1,000 year grudge, victory for Eric is sweet. But even though Russell is the most evil character on the show, sometimes the bad guys are the ones we miss the most.
4. The Hunter’s Souffle:
When Sam finds Daphne’s body in the fridge at his bar, it’s missing one vital component. Her heart, it turns out, has been used by Maryann to be the main ingredient in a souffle gobbled down by Eggs and Tara. At least they got their daily recommended dose of iron.
5. When Godric Met the Sun:
Godric, a 2,000 year old vampire who had shown nothing but hatred towards humans throughout his lengthy lifetime, suddenly experienced a change of heart and decided to sacrifice himself to the Fellowship of the Sun. Hoping his sacrifice would raise empathy for peace between the species, he refuses Eric’s efforts to stop him, even as he offers to go with him to “meet the light.” Burning atop a hotel in Dallas is not how I’d choose to go out, but it’s a beautiful scene revealing the complex relationship between the characters of Eric, Sookie, and Godric.
6. Handcuffed in the Sun:
In a similarly sun-soaked episode, Russell doesn’t believe that Sookie is a fairy and her blood will let him day-walk. Eric offers to prove it, and walk into the light alone, but Russell acquiesces and they plan to “walk into the sun” together. In a terrifying turn of events, Eric handcuffs himself to Russell as the effects of Sookie’s fairy blood wear off them. Their skin begins to char and only when Eric sees the ghost of Godric does he beg Sookie to save them both.
7. Russell Kills Someone on Live TV:
Southern immortal villain Russell Edgington unabashedly reveals his power to the world when he rips the spine of a reporter out on live TV. After basking in the afterglow of the shock, he proceeds to sit down in the anchor chair and calmly read the news while coated in a layer of blood. Choosing to mix things up even more, he recites a monologue comparing the flaws of humans to vampires. He closes out his broadcast with the words “Why would we seek equal rights? You are not equals. We will eat you, after we eat your children. Now, time for the weather!” Take that, Ron Burgundy.
8. Jason’s Dream:
All you heteros out there, this one’s not for you. When Jason nods off, he visits a fantasy involving himself and Eric – both equally hot and bothered for each other. Eric, shirt unbuttoned, mixes a martini, while Jason confesses to his adoration of him. Mock-wrestling foreplay ensures and we get a few precious glimpses of the two tangled in each other’s impressively-biceped embrace before Jason reawakes (in a church pew, fittingly).
9- Bill as Billith:
Bill is tired of apologizing for being a vamp. To deal with his problems, he decides to drink the blood of Lilith, a vampire goddess. Despite Sookie’s pleas, he downs the vial of blood he’s been clutching and almost immediately liquefies into a puddle of blood on the floor.
10- That Orgy Scene:
Maryann Forrester, supernatural party planner, is a follower of the god Dionysus and therefore unable to stop herself from throwing really great orgies on her front lawn. She’s a maenad, the special distinction of a female devotee of the Greek god of over-imbibing and over-indulging. Takes a special woman to guide an entire town into nights of depraved sex and madness they’ll never remember.
