In the not too distant future, as in just 10 hours from now, I will be seeing something kind of cool: Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live.
I share this not to brag or gloat or whatever. Instead, I share it as explanation for the lack of new content on the site today while also promising to write about the experience tomorrow.
If you don't know what Mystery Science Theater 3000 is, dude (or dudette), I wrote all about it when the new Netflix season dropped in April. I was one of the few to not just binge the entire season over that first weekend but also crank out lists ranking the episodes from worst to best. What, you think everyone does that for every new Netflix show these days? Not MST3K. Turns out, some people think it's kind of crazy to baseline 14 90-minute episodes in just 3 days.
Yeah, they're not wrong. I look back on that weekend like a drunk looks back on a blackout period. What happened? Where was I? Which version of me seriously thought the The Beast of Hollow Mountain riffing was funnier than Avalanche? But I do remember laughing. A lot. After an understandably awkward transition period in the first episode, the new bots and host (Jonah Ray) settled in seamlessly, giving us one of the more successful (at least from a creative standpoint) pop culture revivals in recent memory.
Now, they're taking the show on the road, touring North America to riff on classic clunker Eegah (which was previously roasted during Joel Hodgson's final season as host) and more or less do a live version of a normal episode, with pre-recorded bits involving Patton Oswalt and Felicia Day's characters and ... oh, why am I still yammering on about this. I need to hit the road.
