Earlier this week I had my annual review at my day job. It went well (thank you for asking!) but my boss said something that surprised me. I’m a bit of an introvert, and lucky me, my job requires loads (and loads) of meeting with people where I’m expected to speak up. This is part of the reason why I sometimes go days without posting outfit pics – my meeting clothes are generally quite boring and safe. She told me that on the days I dress up and wear clothes that show my personality, I am visibly more confident and engaging, and she encouraged me do so more often. I was surprised, because even though I know I feel better when I’m wearing something I like (versus a basic suit for VIP meetings) I never realized it was a drastic enough for other people to notice. I’ve tried to maintain a clear line between my day job and this other universe where I live, breath, and sleep fashion. But I’m realizing I can’t suppress my need to express myself and my style; whether I like it or not, it comes through.
I know I’m not the only one who struggles with this. A friend of mine who also have a fairly conservative job, has often spoken about how her inability to wear what makes her comfortable and confident makes the workday that much worse. Now, I’m not suggesting going into work Monday morning with a purple mohawk or your favorite sequined miniskirt. But the effort of trying to fit in and keep your passions hidden by erasing your individuality might be affecting your work (and stress level) more than you realize. If Bill Cunningham is right and fashion is the armor to survive everyday life, maybe it should be a priority to arm yourself with what makes you feel best.
