In this post I continue the tradition of featuring guests that visit my home, on blog. Milli and Avni, are sisters and soul mates, they fight like sisters but their love for each other far surpasses any negativity that a tiff can cause. Born and brought up in L.A. you will usually find them dressed chic and classy. Whether they sport a sexy dress or jeans, walking along side them, guarantees envious stares.
The one thing I love most about the sisters, is the ease and pride with which they wear their Indian identity, sometimes by way of Kolhapuri chappals with their jeans, a kurti with their skirts, a namaste at the door, and the family values in their heart..
They even wore saris to their prom, romantic chantilly lace with a sequin tube and none of the prom dresses could hold their own. Knowing their love for Indian fashion, I knew a shoot for the blog would provide the perfect canvas for them to play Indian wedding and do Indian fashion the whole hog - no holds barred..gahgra choli, bindis, gajaras, kajal..
The girls surprised me, they wore the ghagra cholis with as much ease as they would a pair of shorts. The only accessory they wore was a shade of confidence, that you can only have when you love what you wear.
Indian wear, to me, is more about tradition, culture, colours and textures. India has a rich textile heritage that dates back centuries. It amazes me how a small change in weaving technique can create such a vivid and beautiful difference in the garment created with it. An Indian wedding is the perfect chance to wear that heritage with pride..however more and more I see Indian wedding parties turning into a western reception, with women clad in the finest gowns and men ditching their regal bandhgalas for tuxedos.
Are our weddings turning into the perfect marriage of East and West or are we embracing the West at the cost of our traditions? What do you think?
