What’s the Reason?

By Kree8or @surfing_buddha

I’m not trying to start a “bodyboarder versus Stand-up surfer” war here, I’m just genuinely interested in why so many surfers dislike Spongers.

Lets make one thing clear here, I’m not talking about the guy who hires a cheap board whilst on holiday and just splashes around in the white water and gets in everyone’s way. I’m talking about the people like me who are dedicated to the craft, are out in all weathers – summer and winter. Patiently sitting out the long, flat spells and making the most of it when the swell arrives.

When I’m not surfing, I’m working on my fitness to help my sponging. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching videos and reading about how to improve my ride and techniques. I have quality boards and constantly work hard at it.

I keenly support Surfers Against Sewage, and fund raise for them. I’m working on a scheme to help people suffering with depression and anxiety to get into surfing to aid their recovery.

I’m dedicated.

When I’m in the water, I respect the etiquette, I DO NOT grab every wave that comes. I DO NOT drop in on people.

So, why do we boogers get so much crap? I get so fed up of being called a “speed hump” or a “shark biscuit”. A few times I’ve been talking to people when getting changed, nice conversations, but as soon as I take my board out of my car I get the cold shoulder.

I have nothing against my stand up cousins, nothing at all. We’re all out there doing our best in the playground that Mother Nature has blessed us with, does it really matter what we ride?

Still don't like bodyboarders? Do you still feel the same about bodyboarders?
  • Yes
  • Maybe
  • They shouldn't be in the water
  • I'm going to buy a board tomorrow!
