Using the Facebook Privacy Settings

With the advent of digital media, our private life seems to have flown out the window along with our rights to them. Most social media platforms are now been set up to allow access to your confidential information, including contact list and locations. But have you ever consciously given thought to the things you share on your social media, especially Facebook? Sharing everything about you on this platform may not be advantageous to you and may give some people the power to cause you harm, but if you do not have the ‘Privacy’ settings properly set up on your page, then you are doing exactly that. Taking back already shared information or content may not be possible, but you can still protect yourself from sharing images or stories that could attract unwanted attention(s) to you in the future.

The best way to avoid any such hassle is to avoid using Facebook or social media at all. However, we know that in this digital driven era that will be next to impossible. Therefore, we suggest you start protecting yourself by using Facebook’s privacy application (app) tool. It is easy to use and has a lot of advantages to it.

Start by clicking on the ‘Lock’ icon located on the top right side of your page. With the drop down menu, you can decide who can ‘see’ the content of your page, who can ‘tag’ you, who can look you up or even, who can ‘contact’ you.

The app will even let you go back and limit friends from viewing content you previously posted.

Facebook also gives you the option to stop others from posting on your timeline without your permission. This also blocks specific people from seeing what you have posted on your timeline too.

Do you get all those unwanted invitations to play games that you have no interest in playing, or downloading apps you don’t want? Well, you can now block all those with the click of a button. Just check out the privacy settings and use accordingly.

On a final note, we advise that you DO NOT POST or publish any personal information that you do not want others to see or worse, share! Information such as your personal phone number, home address, pictures and the likes, should be held very private. Whenever and whatever else you may decide to post, make sure that the status box is set to ‘friends’ or whichever appropriate group you wish to share that information with.

Remember we already have little or no privacy in our lives. Let’s not allow social media platforms like Facebook, rob us completely of the choice to have one too.

Utilise your privacy settings now. It is there for a reason!!
