TYPHOON HITS THE ROAD WITH THEIR SPICY SAUCE [FREE MP3]

The Honest Truth – Typhoon

Typhoon (@wearetyphoon) describe themselves as Classical/Minimalist/Pop, which is surprisingly an accurate depiction of their music. “Starting Over”, for instance, from their 2010 full-length, Hunger and Thirst, begins with a minimal, gorgeous guitar lick and some softly brushed drums. These main elements continue to drive the song to its conclusion, along with a mournful, simple vocal melody. The addition of brass and strings does spice up the song a bit (the Classical, perhaps?), but the simple heart of the track is never lost.

While their EP released this March, A New Kind of House, features songs with quite a few embellishments to the band’s core sound, the minimalist description again shines through. They can layer the songs with big brass, wind and string ensembles, but the band never seems as though they’re forcing these elements or trying to hard. They are perfect, lovely tracks, rooted in repeated guitar parts as the primary musical force.

The band just finished touring as support for The Decemberists but are still on the road themselves. Check out the dates below and be sure to catch them when they roll through your city.
