Tullamore DEW Review

When it comes to just regular old blended Irish Whiskey Tullamore DEW is one of the better options and one of my favorites to keep around the house for mixing and even sipping now and then. It has a heavier feel to it than many blends (Irish or Scottish) and carries with it a nice sense of malt despite there not being much. I don’t know exactly what they do different, but it’s great.

In Tullamore’s Words: Tullamore DEW

“Triple distilled and patiently aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, this original blended Irish whiskey is known the world over for its smooth and gentle complexity.”

There’s really not a whole lot else to say about this one so let’s just hop right on down to the Tullamore DEW review.

EYE
Toffee

NOSE
Honey, red apples, dried fruit, banana chips, toffee and a touch metallic and malty. It’s interesting and more dynamic than most other 40% chill-filtered Irish blends.

PALATE
Honey, banana chips, red apple, toffee, earthy malt, nutmeg and a touch cinnamon and copper. The darker earthy notes are what help it stand out from other Irish blends on the market.

FINISH
Medium fade out of malt, toffee, dried fruit and spice that fades out to a metallic and alcohol heavy note.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Ok balance, medium body and a soft silken feel.

OVERALL
Tullamore DEW is good as far as a standard Irish blend goes. It’s not wildly complex, it won’t blow your socks off, but it will mix well with cocktails and is perfectly drinkable neat. The darker notes that arrive in the aroma, palate and finish are a nice change of pace to the honied orchard fruit that typically dominates the blended Irish category making it at least mildly interesting.

SCORE: 83/100 (B)
