True Blood’s Todd Lowe Talks About Terry’s Death and What’s Next For Him

Terry DyingWow last night’s episode of True Blood really ran through all the emotions.  There was some comedy and some awesome lines throughout, there was another epic True Blood killing when Bill ripped off Governor Burrell‘s head and then of course there was the big death that had been teased since filming of the season began.  After Arlene had a vampire friend glamour Terry so that he would forget the war, forget all his pain and forget what happened with Patrick, things seemed to be turning around for the couple.  Sadly him being glamoured meant he also forgot that he had asked another marine buddy to kill him and the result was Terry dying in poor Arlene’s arms.  Even knowing it was coming didn’t lessen the sadness as we watched it unfold.  Watching Arlene cradle Terry while he died was one of the saddest moments on the show so far.  The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Todd Lowe, who plays Terry Bellefleur, about how he found out Terry was going to die, what it was like shooting the final episodes and what is next for him.

When asked how he found out that Terry was going to die, Lowe tells THR that he was driving when he got a call from his manager and his agent and he kind of knew at that point.  Brian Buckner took him out for a drink a few weeks later and told him that it had nothing to do with him or his performance it was truly just that there were too many people on the show and as Buckner said at Comic-Con, they are taking the show back to basics.  When asked what it was like to shoot those final scenes, Todd had this to say:

It was a tough six months, I’m not going to lie about that. Coming to work every day, and kind of planning my suicide. I went through a bit of a depression and I didn’t really get any of the quirky, funny Terry moments this year that I always look forward to, so it took a toll on me. I was in a dark place for a while, but just like with a death of a loved one, I felt sorrow and grief and now acceptance. I’m coming out of the grieving process for losing someone that I loved. I loved playing Terry.

He goes on to say that while is sad to say goodbye to Terry he is moving on and looking ahead to another project that is just right for him.  While he personally feels that Terry should have gone out on more noble terms, Lowe acknowledges that for the fans sake writing Terry out in such a dramatic way makes sense and that he feels that he went out for the good of many on the show.

Lowe ordinarily watches episodes of True Blood with friends but he reveals that for last night’s episode he was going to watch by himself to see how it plays out on the screen.  While he’s sad to leave, Todd says that he has made many great friends on the show and that it has allowed him the freedom to not have to jump on the first project that comes along.  He can wait for a project that really speaks to him.

So what’s next for Todd?

I’ve been doing a little bit of writing. I would like to get a show up, and have a little bit more control on the production side. I’ve done some writing in the past, but I’m a novice, so I don’t know if it’s going to go anywhere. I’ve got a project that I’m kind of excited about. It would ideally be a comedy-drama that’s in a unique workplace based on some experiences that I had in my early 20′s.

It was so sad to see Terry go and we want to wish Todd Lowe all the best in his future endeavours.  Terry’s quirkiness and deep love for Arlene were some of the most touching moments on the show.  To read the entire interview with Todd click here.  Let us know what you think of Terry’s death (were you surprised it was him?) in the comment section below.
