True Blood’s Nathan Parsons Discusses His Character’s Love Life

Posted on the 23 July 2014 by Truebloodnetcom @truebloodnet

While James and Jessica have been turning into a boring old married couple getting comfortable with each other and the changing world around them, there has been one human that has been helping James: Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis). It is through this new friendship that we learn of how James was turned and how he is also bisexual. With one thing leading to another, we found Lala and James in the back of a car in Episode 5 (entitled Lost Cause) last week.

Recently The Hollywood Reporter got a chance to ask him all about this story line, and in particular the fact that gay relationships are not as openly physically portrayed on television even though there are now plenty of gay couples gracing our screens. Nathan had this to say:

We just had to be really careful about how we went about it. We didn’t want it to be uncomfortable to watch or over the top. It has to be something that is seemingly organic and loving, instead of just having sex for the sake of having sex. I think that was the difficult line to walk. It comes out of nowhere and we have to do it tastefully, and we all have to be comfortable with what’s happening. But Howard [Deutch], the director, was great about it. Nelsan and I just went along for the ride, and I think it turned out really well.

And this story is important and should be told and needs to be shared. It’s a story that’s being told all over the place, and TV doesn’t pay enough attention to it. The “Do I love this guy or love this girl?” and “Is this right or is this wrong?” becomes more important than the act itself, and that I think was really well done by the writer [Craig Chester] and Howard and Nelsan and myself.

While it seemed Jessica was pretty shaken up by catching out the pair, will there be a rekindling of their relationship? According to Nathan, no, there won’t be. Especially since Jessica will have a new situation to deal with. Nathan didn’t expand on what this would be, it makes fans wonder if maybe Jessica will contract Hep-V like Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) and, more recently, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer)? Or is he simply alluding to the fact that Jason’s (Ryan Kwanten) girlfriend, Violet (Karolina Wydra) knows all about the tryst he and Jessica had not long after Jessica discovered James and Lafayette together?
