Treatment for Golfer’s Elbow in Augusta GA (Medial Epicondylitis)

golfers elbowMany people consider golf a low-level physical activity without much risk for injury. Many injuries can be caused by playing golf, however, including injuries to the ankle, elbow, spine, knee, hip, and wrist.

Most golf injuries are the result of overuse. By repeating the same golf swing motion over and over again, significant stress is placed on the same muscles, tendons, and joints. Over time, this can cause injury.  Golfers most often experience hand tenderness or numbness, and may also have shoulder, back, and knee pain.

What is Medial Epicondylitis, otherwise known as Golfer’s Elbow

Medial epicondylitis occurs with pain and inflammation on the inside of the elbow where the muscles that flex the wrist attach to the bone.  Essentially, Golfer’s elbow is an inflammation of the tendons that attach your forearm muscles to the inside of the bone at your elbow. The forearm muscles and tendons become damaged from overuse — repeating the same motions again and again. This leads to pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow.

Risk Factors for Medial Epicondylitis

  • Golf – with golf there is repetitive use of the muscles causing flexion of the wrist.
  • Tennis – similarly, in tennis, repetitive use of the ‘forehand’ muscles causing flexion of the wrists can lead to this condition, especially with putting more top-spin on the ball.
  • Other sports and occupational activities may be a cause – involving a lot of flexion of the wrist – gripping, grasping etc
  • A direct blow to the elbow may also cause it.

Treatment for Golfer’s Elbow in Augusta GA

We have had great success in treating Golfer’s Elbow here at Georgia Clinic of Chiropractic.  Our unique program comprises of two customized protocols:  Golfer’s Elbow-specific chiropractic treatments and cold laser treatments.  We are the only office in the Augusta area that is able to provide you with both types of treatments on an office visit:

Chiropractic Treatments: The only effective way to recover from a problem related to tendonitis is to address the source of the strain. Chiropractic adjustments are used to correct any mechanical problems that may by associated with the joints of the elbow, wrist or shoulder.

Cold Laser Treatments: Laser treatments can help to hasten the recovery of golfer’s elbow by
improving circulation to the area (angiogenesis), improving lymphatic drainage and increasing the production of serotonin and endorphins to manage pain. In addition to relieving the pain and inflammation of tennis and golfer’s elbow, laser treatments also increases cellular activity, thus facilitating the repair and improving the strength of the repaired tendons.
