Treatment for Constipation in Augusta GA

Constipation is a problem many people face. According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services over 4 million people in the United States deal with frequent constipation. For many of those, it is a chronic condition that affects their life. In fact, there are nearly 3 million doctor’s visits per year because of constipation.  As a rule, constipation should be suspected if more than three days pass between bowel movements or if there is difficulty or pain when passing a hardened stool.

Research done in 2007 and published in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics show that many individuals are not receiving adequate or long-lasting treatment from the medical model. Therefore, many individuals turn to chiropractic for help.

Facts About Constipation

With constipation, the bowels do not move along waste through the intestines like they should. The bowels are controlled by nerves that primarily exit out of the lower part of the spine. These nerves go to the muscles in the intestines and colon, but if they are not working well, the muscles slow down, become weak and do not function optimally.

Chiropractic makes sure that the nerves are working as close to 100% as possible so that the bowels can work as close to 100% as possible.

It is very frequent that individuals go to the chiropractor and never tell the doctor about constipation issues, because they are unaware that chiropractic has anything to do with that, but quickly realize that through chiropractic care, their bowel habits have become much more regular. It is at this point that many patients have told their chiropractor that since being treated, their constipation has improved.

Research Shows Effectiveness of Chiropractic for Constipation

Several research studies have validated the effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating constipation. A 2008 study in Clinical Chiropractic showed that chiropractic care in constipated children caused an improvement in bowel movement frequency as well as decreased straining, pain and rectal bleeding.

Another study in 2007 in Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics revealed chiropractic care causes a dramatic improvement in bowel function and chronic constipation. Yet again, in 2001 an exhaustive study in Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association showed that chiropractic adjustments may help in alleviating low back pain, improving overall well-being, and eliminating chronic constipation.
