Top 5 Perth Eats & News – June

By Foodie Cravings @foodiecravings

Given the cold wet weather, June’s Top 5 Perth Eats are mainly hot foods. The only exception is Hula Bula’s mocktail which I had to include as finding a good mocktail that doesn’t cost as much as an alcoholic beverage (so I recently discovered) isn’t easy!

Top 5 Perth Eats

#1 Stimulattes Shak Shuka ($14) - burger boy and I were out in Subiaco last month and decided we’d have coffee before I headed into the city to catch up with my ex-colleagues. I loved Stimulatte the first time I tried it (read my last Stimulatte review here) and when I saw that they had the same cream cheese bacon bagel I had a couple of years ago on the menu, coffee became brunch. burger boy decided to go for the Shak Shuka which was a stand out dish. It was served with bread topped with hummus which was the perfect side to the eggs poached in a rich thick sauce of tomatoes.

#2 Brika’s pita ($4), hummus ($6) and tzatziki (7) - these were so tasty we ordered three serves through out the night. Although the other mezes were good, the warmed pita, hummus and tzatziki were amazing – best I’ve had in Perth so far.

Plus I found the pita, hummus and tzatziki more value for money than the other mezes we ordered which came with three portions at the menu prices and a bit more for an extra portion ($20+).

#3 Houghton’s Cafe’s woodfired pizza – I don’t normally go crazy for pizza as burger boy have our own pizza bar but I couldn’t get enough of Houghton Winery’s woodfired pizza. We tried a few different toppings last month at my sister-in-law’s birthday and they all tasted great. Base was thin and crispy, toppings were generous and there was just the right amount of cheese.

#4 Alfred’s Kitchen’s Ham & Pea Soup ($4.50 for a small, $6.50 for a large) - Alfred’s makes the best Ham & Pea soup – it’s thick and there’s heaps of chunky bacon bits. I also love that Alfred’s still manage to have a bonfire going on a wet Winter’s night. It’s also burger boy’s favourite Perth burger joint, check out my full review of Alfred’s Kitchen here.

You’ll find Alfred’s Kitchen on the corner of Meadow & James St Guildford. Alfred’s Kitchen is open until midnight Sun – Wed, 1am Thursdays and 3am Friday & Saturdays.

#5 Hulu Bula Bar mocktails – since being pregnant with junior burger, I’ve been drinking a whole lot of mocktails. I was happy to discover that Hula Bula Bar have two mocktails on the menu for $8. I had the Spongebob which is a giant guava and passionfruit smoothie with coconut – it’s the same as Hula Bula Bar’s Bikini Bottom Cocktail minus the rum.

Hula Bula Bar’s mocktail was double the size and much cheaper than mocktails I’ve had at other Perth bars. Plus, it wasn’t just a simple mix/shake of juices, it tastes just like the cocktail minus the alcohol.
