Let’s get this straight- pregnancy is tough, but getting pregnant is even harder!

Pregnancy and the world of pressures it brings with it is something undeniable. When I was looking to get pregnant, back of my mind I was constantly weighing the pros and cons of  being a Double income no kid scenario person and double income with kid scenario person. But, I tool the plunge and somehow, we know how, I was pregnant with my daughter. That was a typical path of pregnancy, but this post is about the non typical path- Fertility treatment path and the myths associated with them.

One of my close friend is going through a tough time conceiving. She, like many mothers, is trying to weigh fertility treatment pros and cons. With such news, questions are meant to arise. This got me thinking and delving into how doctors today need to really work on clearing out doubts of their patients before they step into the complicated process. Her biggest fear were the pain involved. That left me wondering – do all fertility treatments lead to pain?

I did some research and found astounding number of myths and predisposed notions to this invention of creation. Fertility treatments can be physically, emotionally and financially draining, but they definitely produce the desired result :). Meanwhile, read on to discover myths that border on scaring couples even before treatments begin!

Fertility treatment goes against nature

Whoever tells you this must never be allowed to speak! Being able to conceive is probably one of the most natural things for a human being. Fertility treatments don’t go beyond the natural functioning of your body. They in fact attempt to remove or reduce the barriers that cause difficulties in conception. That’s all.

Twins and triplets in plenty

Well? If you have really chosen to take on this challenge, then you must know that a majority of women that undergo fertility treatments do in fact have a single child; but are usually at a greater risk of multiple pregnancies (twins or triplets or more). This is simply because of the practice of transferring several embryos into the uterus to increase chances for success. It’s best to get your doubts cleared by your doctor who will tell you all you need to know.

Easy peasy even after 40

Wrong!!! The minute you get to know that you as a couple are having problems conceiving, it is best that you plan other options starting from that moment on. To assume that things will be okay if you waited a few years is not advisable. Conception through fertility treatments also takes into account the age factor- age of the woman and that of the sperm donor. A woman’s fertility starts to decrease in her late 20s and by age 35 it is reduced by nearly half. While a man’s fertility also declines with age, the decline is less significant than a woman’s.

Infertility is a disorder!

What?! Again, the clan of people that tells you this must be locked up. It simply means failure of a couple to conceive after one year of trying. This again can be due to several factors including age or lifestyle. Choosing the proper fertility treatment at the right age can help you get pregnant faster.

Blame it on the woman

It’s quite easy and convenient to point fingers at the woman as being the cause of anything unnatural with regards to pregnancy. The truth is it is a mixed bag; causes of infertility are shared by male and female partners. Get your facts right by talking to your doctor.

Fertility treatments success rates are pretty high and we as a generation should consider ourselves blessed to have it at our disposal. These myths are just tip of the iceberg when it comes to conception. Prepare yourself and your partner emotionally and have a whole hearted discussion with your doctor.
