Thor always gets the least amount of anticipation from me mostly because I am not as invested nor interested in the character, but I suppose I’m not alone on that front. Despite my general “meh” attitude towards the cantankerous Norse god, I enjoyed his first solo outing and there’s no reason not to give this sequel a chance. In fact, after having seen the trailer for it, it appears that it’s taken some notes on how to improve upon the first film.
But before we discuss that, first take a look at the UK trailer that was just released the other day:
While I enjoyed the Asgardian family feud in the first movie, the sequel does well to introduce other races and characters to expand the universe beyond the gods and the frost giants. In fact, the whole movie looks so much bigger in scale, but that’s not saying much considering the first one took place in a small town in Texas (I thought everything was supposed to be bigger in Texas?) most of the time. Also gone is the general flamboyancy of Thor’s armor, much like the new Captain America costume. The colors are more subdued and there’s more focus on function than fashion so it doesn’t look like Thor is off to gallivant and drink mead or whatever.
I also noticed that the palaces in Asgard look more…organic and less a product of the CGI, which is a welcome change for me because I didn’t like how incredibly shiny everything looked the first time around (it was like a third world dictator’s idea of a summer house). I’m glad that Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman are back to reprise their roles and Christopher Eccleston’s (fondly remembered by most as the 9th Doctor) turn as the title villain, Malekith, is…pretty cool, but the jury’s still out on how things will fare with him shouldering that burden after Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. That will be one tough act to follow.
So anyway, the trailer looks awesome. I feel more confident that they’re aiming to deliver a better Thor experience than before, but it also appears that the trailer doesn’t do much to highlight the comedic appeal from the first film. I hope they kept some of that intact so it doesn’t turn into a two-hour viking telenovela.
Thor: The Dark World will come out on November 8th in the U.S.
P.S. Two things.
1. Is it just me or does Chris Hemsworth look a little lankier?
2. Anybody else think that they ought to adapt the “God Butcher” story from the current Thor comics for the inevitable third movie? That would be incredible.
