The Vampire Diaries 3x02: The Hybrid

Original Air Date: 22 September 2011

Storyline: Klaus puts a plan in motion that will give him even more power, but even with the unwilling participation of werewolf Ray Sutton, things don't go exactly as Klaus had planned. Damon and Alaric reluctantly go along with Elena's new strategy to find Stefan, leading Damon into a dangerous fight with a werewolf. Jeremy turns to Matt for help as he continues to try to understand what the ghosts from his past want from him. Unaware that Caroline is in need of his help, Tyler faces an emotional confrontation with his mother.Best Quote:

Elena: You've been dodging my calls.
Damon: Busy day. Dead fake girlfriend and all.

Damon's BestWhen I drag my brother back from the edge and deliver him back to you, I want you to remember the things you felt when he was gone.Review: If there's something this show never fails to provide is good twists. The episode ends with yet another one - involving Caroline - but before we get to that, we need to talk about what's going on with Elena, Damon and Alaric.

After receiving the phone call from Stefan in the middle of the night, Elena is determined to save him (go figure) and, somehow, guilts Alaric into going with her to track a pack of werewolves on a full moon night. Leave it to her to make stupid moves and put herself and everyone else in danger for the sake of saving someone who doesn't want to be saved. This is just one of those reasons why I don't like Elena. She's reckless and self-sacrificing and, after this episode, I'm betting she will become again the one everyone needs to protect, which will make her say obnoxious things, like "it's all my fault". Yawn.
The episode reveals Klaus' ultimate goal - like we didn't know that - and it's to create an army of hybrids because "you don't arm yourself after war has been declared. You build your army so big that no one ever dares pick the fight." So they are tracking down Ray's werewolf pack and Klaus feeds them his blood, in hopes of turning them all into hybrids. There's only one catch: he's been told (by whom? Is there anyone else stronger than the oldest and strongest vampire in the world?) that he can create other hybrids if he breaks the curse and kills the vampire, the werewolf and the doppelganger. But since Elena is alive and kicking, his hybrids are turning rabid and eventually die. Seeing how Stefan is more transparent than glass, it's only a matter of time before Klaus figures out she was brought back to life and her stupid attempts to get her boyfriend back will definitely not help.
Elena and Damon had a couple of great scenes in this episode. My favorites were Damon pushing her into the lake and, of course, telling her that he wants her to remember what she felt while Stefan was gone after he brings him back to her. The scenes in the woods also gave us some good action with these two - and yes, I know that Ian Somerhalder said that "Delena" (I hate that word) will never happen, but we can all dream, can't we?
There was also some cheesiness there with Elena convincing Alaric that he needs them as much as they need him, but it was all good in the end: I like the idea of Alaric sticking around as a father figure for Jeremy, not to mention that his bromance with Damon is probably the best relationship that has been developed withing this show.
Another bromance that is starting to develop is the one between Jeremy and Matt. We've had a glimpse of that in the season premiere, but now Jeremy enlists Matt's help to try to contact Vicki and find out why she asked for help. Except that the ghosts of girlfriends past are not so easy to figure out: while Vicki is asking for help saying that she can come back, Anna warns Jeremy not to trust Vicki. So, which of them should the young Gilbert listen to? There will be a little drama going on there, as I'm sure Matt will do anything in his power to bring Vicki back - if there ever is such a possibility.
Another question is how will Bonnie fit into all of this? She's still absent in this beginning of season. But Jeremy doesn't seem to really need Bonnie at this point, seeing how the information on how to contact a dead person is all over the internet. Isn't it interesting how Jeremy can simply bing stuff and find out reliable information on everything supernatural?
The last thing to talk about is Caroline a Tyler. Last week's episode left us with Caroline trying to sneak out of the Lockwood's house and Mrs. Lockwood taking her down with vervain darts. She called for help in none other than Caroline's father, who now has the perky vampire locked up somewhere. Talk about twists! Will Bill Forbes kill his own daughter - after all, he does call her a monster - or will he do the same thing the sheriff did? Also, how did Carol know about Caroline? She said she's been on her trail for months, does this mean she also knows about the Salvatores?
With all this happening, Tyler takes a chance and shows his mother just how much of a monster he himself can be. Carol had no idea about the secret that ran through the Lockwood family, and her son shows her in the most graphic way possible: he locks her in with him while he turned. Of course, this changes Carol's mind about her son's girlfriend - but will it be too late? I honestly hope not, Caroline is one of my favorite characters of this show.
There was a lot of stuff going on in this episode as well and I only expect things to get even more hectic, especially with Damon coming face to face with Klaus.
