Nowadays, if you don’t have a social media presence, you’re missing out. At least, that’s what many business marketing experts are saying about social media nowadays.

There’s a catch, though. Even though it’s easy to sign your business up for several social network sites, it’s not that easy to build a following that’s going to make your marketing efforts worth it. In fact, a lot of people don’t take the time to understand why certain social media marketing practices work better than others.

Many don’t even understand why social media isn’t working for them at all. Here, we’re going to look at several reasons why social media isn’t working for you.

You’re promoting too much.

A lot of social network users don’t like advertisements, especially if they know they’re looking at an advertisement. So, if you’ve been posting more advertisements than actual content, rethink your social media strategy.

People follow others on social media platforms for a wide variety of reasons, though never because they like their advertisements. You can make your business look more interesting to them by ditching the promotional content and uploading content that they can experience instead of ignore.

Your brand has no personality.

A lot of businesses miss one important aspect of developing their brand: they have no discernible personality. Even if you do use your brand logo as your profile picture or icon, social network users still want to see some personality emerge from behind that image.

People want others to listen to them, so why not give them a personality that will listen to them? As long as you develop a voice that can connect with other people on that level, people will feel more comfortable engaging with your business.

You’re not communicating with your followers.

There are many businesses that don’t take the time to interact with their followers via social media. A lot of them are often left wondering why they don’t have any more followers looking at their content.

You can’t just advertise to your followers—you also have to communicate with them. Many businesses who do have followers in the thousands simply provide them reasons to keep following their social network account, and subsequently, their business.

They talk to them. If you communicate with your followers, you’re giving them a reason to keep following your brand. Making them feel like they’re making a difference can go a long way in making your business presence on any social media platform that much more well-to-do.

You might be using the wrong social media sites.

Not every business benefits from being on Facebook, just like other businesses don’t fare well on other social media platforms. It’s always a better idea to focus on using social media sites that pertain to what your business needs, instead of signing up for every social media site in existence.

Have a business that attracts a more casual audience? You might fare well with promoting and talking to fans on Twitter. Facebook is a great platform for businesses who provide promotional incentives to followers who commit to their brand. If you want to network with like-minded business owners, LinkedIn can help you get in touch with them.

Just take a look at the social media sites out there and see what you need, not what you like. If you narrow your choices down, you’ll have a chance to actually help your business followers grow.
