The Small Screen Diaries- 05/17/24

I’ve been reading about this woman claiming to be Martha from Baby Reindeer (Netflix) and all the press she’s getting, and I’m just wondering why she would want to confirm that she is Martha? The series says they changed things for dramatic purposes, her name isn’t Martha, so why out herself? It certainly is an interesting show, but I don’t get the internet’s need to find Martha.

Fallout (Amazon) inched closer to the season finale for me, as I knocked out episode 7, which seems to have positioned every major character up against the finality of their season long arc. The Ghoul is headed to settle a score with someone from his past, Maximus is about to have to answer to the other Knights for his shenanigans, Lucy has the head so maybe she can get her dad back, and we’re about to find out what is up with Vault 31.

Under The Bridge (Amazon) jumped back in time to show how Reina’s parents met, and also a scene where the girls came to visit Reina and see her household. Of course, having these three psychopaths anywhere would make me nervous. Well, two. There’s been this hint that Dusty might not be gone, but the other two have serious problems. And then, Manjeet gets arrested for sexually assaulting his daughter, which is clearly bullshit. It’s so hard to like this girl. Her friends are trash, and I want to see her do something nice for someone.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz (Peacock) continues to be a draining emotional journey. Yes, Harvey Keitel is doing some solid work, as is Melanie Lynskey, but Jonah Hower King is really showing up. He’s emotionally devastated in every scene as his character continues to watch the holocaust happen around him, and he keeps putting numbers on people, which keep getting killed. There’s such a chilling moment at the end of Episode 4 where he’s giving a tattoo as ashes are falling, and he knows what the ashes are, and where they are coming from, and he’s struggling to maintain his composure.

Abbott Elementary (Hulu) was excellent this week. just, totally perfection. I think this was my favorite episode of the season, as the kids take a field trip to the park, and there’s another school there whose teachers are quite standoffish which leads to hilarious results. They also have the janitor alone at the school finding Ava’s secret bathroom. Plus, our favorite will-they-won’t-they duo spends some time heavy flirting. Just a really solid episode. The audio description has gotten better, admittedly.

I also really enjoyed Loot (Apple Plus) this week, which also saw the will-they-won’t-they couple spend time together… in a mall. But the funniest part was her assistant seemed to have ex’s all over the place, who he ghosted. My favorite line was “I haven’t had ice cream since I was 7, when I started dieting.”

I don’t usually discuss this show, because Hulu doesn’t transfer the audio description, if any exists, but The Masked Singer is now down to a final two. Goldfish is 100% Vanessa Hudgens. She had a clue a while back that nailed it for me, when she talked about how she suffered a major loss the night before her big debut. Hudgens famously lost her father the night before she played Rizzo in grease Live, performing less than 24 hours after his death. It also makes sense that she’s doing this season, as Nicole would have guessed her in a heartbeat, since they were in Rent together. She’s also had clues that point to Beastly, and her voice work on the animated Fright Crew. The Gumball machine is James Van Der Beek, who I feel pretty sure about. He’s not known for being a singer, and the quarterback and cheerleader clues certainly fit Varsity Blues, while that earth/ball clue that led the judges to World of Dance could mean many things for James, who has competed on Dancing With The Stars (Mirrorball Trophy) twice. once literally, and once as himself in Don’t Trust THe Bitch in Apartment 23. he also got his break on As The World Turns. I can’t match the band clues. He had the doctor clue, and he’s played doctors before, recently as part of the ensemble in Downsizing. the ball could also be a reference to pose. He does have a lot of kids, I just know nothing about his wife’s health. I had thought of Jesse Bradford, as the cheerleading clues line up for him really well, and the band clue makes sense since he played drums in that, but it doesn’t match the quarterback clue.
