The Small Screen Diaries- 05/10/24

Some mornings I wake up, and I’m just like… what the hell did I watch yesterday? I remember Fallout (Amazon), which showed a little more of what was going on in the new vault (BVault 4) that two of our three leads stumbled into. Maximus has the weirdest ways of asking for sex. Honestly, I know it’s supposed to be funny, but it was the only thing i didn’t like about the episode. those two have zero chemistry, and he just suddenly brings up sex. But, what is going on in the vault is so weird, and horrifying. Meanwhile, The Ghoul is still alive (I mean… as much as he can be), and is wrangled by some local “lawmen’ where he learns more about the world around him, and also we see more about him in flashbacks.

The Good Doctor (Hulu) is part of the contingency of programming that has gotten better audio description later in the season after initial complaints. i did think that this episode, especially regarding the stuff with Hannah, had much better description than it was giving earlier in the season. Once again though, I’m still confused as to why Vi-Tech is primary narrating for a British audience, and why we get that description. More on that in a minute.

Abbott Elementary (Hulu) is the same company, same narrator as the Good Doctor, and while the audio description has gotten better, they referred to cash, or dollars, as a note. “He hands her a note”, which in the US would mean something else, but within the scene itself was an obvious reference to money, it a handwritten note. It’s odd to hear non-Brit voices giving Brit audio description. It’s not impossible for Vi-Tech to make quality description for audiences, as they have improved a lot, but it would have been nice for ABC to stick with a company that didn’t need a learning curve.

I didn’t have any problems with the Rookie (Hulu), another ABC show. I’m convinced nothing changed here, as the whole season has been just like every other. I know that Shondaland fought against switching AD teams for Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy, and part of me wonders if the same didn’t happen at the Rookie, because this narrator isn’t being used on any other show that I can tell, and it feels like every other season.

The Girls On The bus (MAX) started off with a character keeling over in the 8th episode, and then just ran from there. I know FX is considering a second season of what was a limited series in Shogun, but I dont’ need more of this from MAX.
