The Small Screen Diaries- 04/29/24

I started off my day with the cheerful Ripley (Netflix), which really put the audio description to work. He killed again, and the attention to detail as Tom spent all this time trying to figure out how to dispose of a body, and clean everything up, really made me appreciate the audio description so much more. probably the best example so far of why this episode needed audio description, even if I did get the stomach churning image of Tom kissing a corpse thanks to the description. So gross.

Renegade Nell (Disney Plus) is just a surprise charmer of a series, and shows like this and The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, are why I try to check out all these random shows in the first place, because I never know when I’ll find a gem. This episode probably featured the most of Billy we’ve had thus far, and that dynamic made it more interesting, and I really do enjoy this audio description overall.

Tracker (Paramount Plus) had another solid episode. This suspenseful mystery episode had a lot of little details, trials of blood, things that Colter found along the way that he needed to find who he was looking for, but also for the audience to keep on their edge of their seat. Without this exceptional audio description, the show would be hard to, um, track? But seriously, I know the show doesn’t go heavy into investing in the descriptions of the characters of the week, but it is very invested in giving us the clues to help us land toward figuring out the twist, or at least appreciating the journey it took to get there.

Ghosts (Paramount Plus) revealed a ghosts background, which was necessary in order to rescue one of the Ghosts. I’m a little behind, and I’m still being vague here because I don’t want to ruin anything. probably one of the more emotionally resonant episodes, given what someone had to admit to in order to save another, and seeing that shame and regret in a character that normally never projects those qualities really helped to solidify Ghosts as one of those shows the Emmy’s really need to start watching. Oh, and the audio description that helped to pull all this together, even that really difficult reveal, was done well.

Manhunt (Apple Plus) is officially done now. The last episode was the trial, and then a lot of information about what happened to some of the major players. The last episode of the series was by far the best, and oddly the best acted. it was like everyone showed up for a courtroom drama, but had to do other episodes they weren’t ready for. I’m not sure I would recommend this series, even with a strong Tobias Menzies performance. his Emmy category this year is too insane for him to get a nomination.

So Help Me Todd (Paramount Plus) saw the titular sleuth and his mom try and help a guy who had been declared dead by the Social Security Administration prove he was still alive, and figure out who would have done this in the first place. An interesting topic. I will miss this show and its cast, and I wish someone would save this well performing show. This is a Top 25 show. Come on now.
