The Small Screen Diaries- 04/09/24

Let’s see how this day went. Another episode of Three Body Problem (Netflix) in the bank, and considering the last episode was utterly nuts, this episode was a lot more grounded.Sure, the episode ends with a reveal into what that probe would actually be,but you know. Oh, and that one guy is buying a star. I just saw the viewership for Netflix, and this was still on top. Duh. The audio description is still really solid from Darran and Co. Top Tier.

Then we transition to The Dynasty (Apple Plus) that tackled the Aaron Hernandez days of the team. The whole episode is devoted to that wonderful human being. Just a whole episode about Aaron Hernandez. Episode 6, in case you want to skip. The audio description is solid though, especially given the docuseries format. Top/Middle Tier.

Renegade Nell (Disney Plus) has the kind of narration that is so damn quirky, I want to give it a pat on the back just for trying something different. I know people will *HATE* this audio description though. This guy is having WAY too much fun for them. For example, in the third episode, Nell (and another) need to escape out a window rather quickly. The narrator says something to the effect of “everyone else heads out the normal way. The door.” And there are little quirky comments throughout the series. I’m afraid to lose all credibility for praising this track too much, but considering the elements being in fantasy and action, there’s quite a lot of attention to detail here in the description. It’s just very clear, Disney Plus had no list of “do’s and do not’s. For example, compare this “over”-description with the under-description Percy Jackson was stuck with, and I take this any day of the week. Middle tier.

The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy (Amazon) was something I just went back to on a lark. I’m not a huge fan of the show, this was episode 4, and it just does very little for me in terms of humor. But the audio description seems Ok. Not fantastic, considering this is a series of aliens running a hospital so very little has any basis in reality, but considering the rate at which characters speak, I think it’s OK. Middle tier.

Death and Other Details (Hulu) was a show that constantly felt like it was about to end, and then didn’t. And by the time we get to the finale, and that absolutely bonkers reveal of who has actually been alive all this time, I just cannot with this show. Mandy Patinkin is a national treasure, and he is back in the season finale. I say season, because this episode ends in a way that would suggest they’d like to do another. Will they? As much as i love Mandy, I kinda hope not. Roy Samuelson’s narration is predictably good for a murder mystery. I know he’s had shows that have given him more to do, and more to describe. This show is tough to grade, because it always seems like it is trying to bamboozle you with its absurd plot twists, so it has this unecessarily large cast that is honestly quite hard to follow and remember all the time. I’m not sure whaat the audio description can do to make up for that, but I don’t think this is a well written TV-series, which somewhat handicaps the audio description in its ability to make things make sense. Like, that dude who jumped in the helicopter in Episode 9. Honestly, could not remember who that was. I’m sure he’s been there the whole time, but this show just doesn’t do itself favors. I would rarely advise a binge watch, but perhaps that would actually benefit this. It did have a weekly roll out though. Middle/Top tier.
