The Small Screen Diaries- 03/26/24

Another pretty slow day, as most weekdays are balancing work with TV watching. but, the Gentleman (Netflix) had our lead explore other venues to try and get the criminal enterprise off his property, by helping an actor with a blackmail problem. I would safely put this in the top tier now of audio description I’m listening to, if there are three tiers, Top, middle, or bottom. It hasn’t committed any sins that I can remember, and leans into the violent and Guy Ritchie tone of the show.

The Completely Made Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin (Apple Plus) is the show I didn’t know I needed until it happened. I love this thing and would highly recommend the show. I think the audio description is probably middle to top, but the show is laugh out loud funny, and one of the silliest things I’ve seen in a while. Please renew this. I hope people are watching it.

Ark: The Animated Series (Paramount Plus) continued to evolve the story of our lead, while introducing the character Michelle Yeoh plays. There’s also some high tech in a cave, spiders, and the mystery continues. I do not like this audio description. The narrator sounds like she’s auditioning to be a narrator, and the description in the second episode had a grammar issue that was quite clunky. This is in the bottom right now.

And finally, Tokyo Vice (MAX) advanced the story, and the only real problem here is the one-narrator thing. However, over Shogun, this narrator is making an attempt to change the inflection slightly when reading for female characters. I think this description is well written, and I feel bad for this narrator, because being understaffed is not his fault. But, because of that, I would rank this in the middle to bottom of the shows. It is above Ark. So that’s something.
