Having lived through the first six months of the year, quite honestly, barring few films, we haven’t seen any blockbuster hits in Tamil. The biggest hits of this year seem to have come through a bunch of small, low-budget flicks with non popular actors. This leads to the conclusion whether the bigger films starring the superstars still have it in them to produce runaway success. Here are the most anticipated films of the year, in no particular order, which I believe will appeal everybody and succeed. Having said that we have to wait and see what is about to unfold.
Mugamoodi –
Superheroes have cult following across the globe but we don’t even have
a single one of our own. Tragic! Mostly, all superheroes are comic characters brought to India from countries in the West and we idolize them as though they’re our own. Thanks to director Myssikn, we’ll very soon; precisely in about a week from now will have our own superhero. Mugamoodi starring Jiiva, Naren and Pooja Hegde is touted to be a ‘superhero’ flick, of not the ‘Spiderman’ or ‘Batman’ types and promises to entice all type of the audiences. I wish it does because I’ve got super expectations from the film. The music is already a chartbuster hit, with ‘Vaaya Moodi Suma’ playing on all radio stations and in every household. Settai –
A remake of Hindi ‘Delhi Belly’, R. Kannan directed ‘Settai’ is one of the films that I’m eagerly looking forward to. Of course, the film will not be as foul mouthed as its original version, as confirmed by the unit, but I’m sure we’ll be presented with an extra dose of laughter. However, after the disastrous ‘Kanden Kadhalai’, a remake of ‘Jab We Met’, I have my own doubts if the director can pull this one off successfully.
Vishwaroopam –
Needless to say, its Kamal ‘Legendary’ Haasan, and the name in itself gives you reasons to wait patiently for his film. As an actor, you make good, bad and very bad films. Kamal may not have the 3
rd category in his kitty but definitely has good mix of the 1
st and 2
nd category of films. After his mega successful magnum opus ‘Dasavathaaram’, Kamal returned with what he’s considered to be a master at – comedy, only to disappoint his fans with ‘Manmadhan Ambu’. Will Kamal give his fans what they’ve be wanting from him for a long time in ‘Vishwaroopam’, his upcoming Indian spy thriller film. I’m eagerly looking forward to the film’s music because it’s composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, almost after 10 years in Tamil.
Thuppakki –
After sources confirmed that Vijay-Gautham ‘Yohan’ was dropped for
undisclosed reasons, I was left with ‘Thuppakki’ to cheer for. Although not a big fan of Vijay, ‘Thuppakki’ still remains to be one of the most anticipated films of the year due to A.R Murugadoss, who gave India’s first 100cr grossing film ‘Ghajini’ with Aamir Khan. Vijay may not be the best actor in the industry but with his humongous fan following, he’s sure to give the big guns in the industry a run for the money. But, the question is will Vijay-Murugadoss combo work?
Undoubtedly, ‘Mattrraan’ becomes my most anticipated film of the year. If we keep the fact will this film be successful aside then I’ll definitely watch this film in an effort to appreciate Suriya’s effort. Sources confirm that he’s worked harder than any of his films in the past. A close friend, who’s in the entertainment business, also told me that Suriya participated in about 2500 shots to complete some important portion of the film. Joining hands with K.V Anand yet again, Suriya plays conjoined twins in the film and he’s paired opposite Kajal Agarwal. The director is basking in the success of two back-to-back hits, Ayan and Ko; can he make it in three in a row? Unfortunately, music by Harris Jeyraj didn’t quite live up to expectations and has been receiving mediocre reception.
Kochadaiyaan –
With Rajini’s both daughters, Aishwarya and Soundarya, having donned the hat
of a director, the wait is on to decide who’s best of the two, when Kochadaiyaan starring Superstar Rajinikanth will hit theatres. A period film, Kochadaiyaan
is based on the life of Emperor Kochadaiyaan Ranadhiran. Recently, Soundarya Ashwin cleared all rumours by confirming that the film will have all ingredients of a typical ‘Rajini’ film and the fans need not worry about its genre. A.R Rahman has been roped in for the third time in a row to compose the music. With expectations soaring with every minute, all fingers are crossed, as millions wait to see the superstar shine on the screen.
Neethaane En Ponvasantham –
Gautham has a knack for making love films, which he proved with Minnale and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. He’s back to recreate the romantic magic with Jiiva and Samantha in ‘Neethaane En Ponvasantham’. This film will be Jiiva’s big ticket to stardom provided ‘Mugamoodi’ clicks. The film’s music is quite talked about after Illayaraja was roped in to compose the tunes in Jan 2012. I only hope Gautham got his casting right because I don’t picture Jiiva as a lover boy; he’s better off playing a role with some substance of humor and sarcasm in it. I may be proven wrong however it’s only after ‘Ek Deewana Tha’, I strongly believe he should take a second opinion about his casting abilities.
Paradesi –
One of the most unpredictable directors in Tamil film industry is Bala. He’s u
npredictable because he’s known to add some uniqueness in all his films. In Paradesi, starring Adharvaa, Dhansika and Vedhika; Bala is casting 200 junior artistes who have gone bald and remained like that throughout the 200-day schedule of the film. ‘Paradesi’ is an acid test for the leading actors in the film; one that will decide their future in the industry.
