SXSW 2014: Heesun Lee

HeeSun Lee

A Christian Korean Hip-Hop artist. A lot of rap tends to reinforce some pretty strong stereotypes in the genre and so when someone goes against the grain it can be a nice change of pace but when it’s genuine rather than a gimmick (‘ye) it’s supremely refreshing.

Make no mistake HeSun Lee can spit some serious fire but her rhymes are actually intelligent and poetic rather than what you’re forced to expect when the beat drops. Speaking of beats, the one bedding this track is marvellous, dark, hypnotic and carries the flow like a ghost.

A female rapper is going to be compared to Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj and the reasons I wouldn’t bother doing that is there’s no sense of caricature here, it’s real talk and coming from someone intent on telling their story in their own way rather than conforming to institutionally accepted molds.
