ABSTRACT

Spider veins are mostly harmless. They are damaged, noticeable clusters of small blood vessels under the skin which appear in blue, red or purple color. Its appearance is like a spider web (tree branches). It is also called thread veins, sunburst veins, stellate veins etc. This is more common with aging. Sometimes people get confused between varicose vein and spider vein but they are actually different from each other. It can develop anywhere but most of the time it appears in the face or legs. It is usually a cosmetic issue because most of the time we don't like their look. By changes in our lifestyle we can prevent the formation of new ones. So let's read about spider veins in brief.

INTRODUCTION

Spider veins are damaged, prominent small blood vessels present just under the skin surface which appear like spider webs. They rarely cause any health issues because they are not dangerous. It can develop anywhere but mostly appear on the face or legs. It rarely causes any symptoms. Sometimes it can be an early sign of CVI (chronic venous insufficiency) and may lead to any complication.

CAUSES

Most of the time it happens without any reason and exact pathophysiology is unknown. Following are some factors which may be the cause of this disease

  • Aging
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
  • Injury
  • Connective tissue disease
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Genetic disorder

RISK FACTORS

Following are the risk factors

  • Long term standing and sitting
  • Genetic history
  • Have obesity
  • During pregnancy
  • Use birth control pill
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
  • Quit smoking or have smoking

Symptoms

It is generally asymptomatic but very few people experience the following symptoms

DIAGNOSIS

Physical examination

By physical appearance of veins look we may find out the diagnosis.

Biological and medical history

We can take medical history or biological history of the patient.

TREATMENT

Spider veins are harmless and asymptomatic but cosmetic purposes are one of the reasons to treat this condition. Treatment includes

Sclerotherapy

It is a therapy in which a spider vein is injected with a chemical solution that collapses the spider veins and helps the blood to flow. After a few weeks affected part fades.

Laser therapy

It is a non-invasive treatment in which a laser is used to create heat and vanish the spider vein.

PREVENTION

  • Avoid long term sitting and standing
  • Elevate your legs at least two times a day above the heart to keep healthy circulation
  • Avoid wearing tight cloth
  • Do exercise of leg muscles or walk to increase circulation of legs
  • Maintain your body weight
  • Don't cross the legs during sitting
  • Use light weight compression stocking

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW

In ayurveda there are 3 types of sharirika dosha i.e vata, pitta and kapha. Homeostasis of all three dosha leads to all the normal physiological functions of all cells and tissues taking place on the other hand during their disequilibrium state causes somatic diseases namely jvara, atisara, sopha, sosa, svasa, meha etc. The doshas, dhatus and malas function normally when the body is alive. In ayurveda spider veins is the vikruti (changes taking place at the level of fundamental factors of the disease) of pitta dosha and raktavaha sroto dusti.

ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING PITTA

  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Increased intake of fish, meat of goat, sheep
  • Excess intake of sesamum oil, mustard, linseeds
  • Excess consumption of pungent, sour, salty, irritant, burning food
  • Sexual intercourse

PITTA VRIDHI LAKSHANA

According to Susruta ( S.Su 15/13)

  • Yellowish discolouration of the body
  • Increased body temperature
  • Desire for cold things
  • Disturbed sleep/diminished sleep
  • Fainting
  • Loss of strength
  • Weakness in sense organs
  • Yellowish discolouration of stool, urine, eyes

PITTA KSAYA LAKSHANA

According to Susruta ( S.Su 15/7)

  • Diminished body temperature
  • Sluggish digestive functions
  • Loss of complexion

TREATMENT

Following treatment should be follow

  • Virechana and raktamokshan karma
  • Shital pradeha, preshek (irrigation) and abhyanga (massage)
  • Consumption of madhur-tikt, kashay ras dominant foods which is cool in nature
  • Use of milk and ghee
  • Use of pittashamak (which decreases the pitta dosha) dravya like- chandan (Santalum album), neem (Azadirachta indica), ghritkumari ( Aloe barbadensis miller) etc.

RAKTAVAHA SROTAS

Channels which carry blood are called rakta vaha srotas. Without the involvement of doshas, rakta will not aggravate.

ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS

According to charaka ( C.Vi 5/14)

  • Intake of substance which induces burning sensation inside the body (pitta aggravating food)
  • Excessive consumption of unctuous, hot, watery substances
  • Excessive exposure to sun and heat

RAKTAVAHA SROTODUSTI LAKSHANA

  • Bluish discolouration of body
  • Fever
  • Burning sensation
  • Paleness
  • Haemorrhages
  • Redness in eye

TREATMENT

Following treatment should be follow

  • Raktamokshan karma
  • Raktapitta chikitsa is very effective
