Soccer Mommy has released her first new song since 2018 with ‘lucy’. Described by the Nashville musician (known as Sophie Allison to her family and friends) as ‘a song about struggling with inner demons and your own mortality, but I masked it with this scenario of being seduced by the devil’, it opens with Smiths-esque jangly guitar hooks before evolving into something that is equal parts (Sandy) Alex G and Wolf Alice – except with a deliciously tempting dark side in the lyrics.
Sophie starts the song by explaining how she’s find the ‘root of all evil’ in ‘a person with shiny eyes and hair like a feather’ and how they’re all set to break her before then pleading with this mysterious figure known as ‘lucy’ to ‘quit taunting me’ as the soundscapes become ever more expansive.
