Secret Wino Santa arrived early this year, leaving not a lump of coal, but a gorgeous bottle of Grand Cru Blancs de Blanc Brut Champagne from grower Pierre Legras  of the Côtes de Blancs Grand Cru village of Chouilly.

For those of you unaware of Secret Wino, it’s a silly but fun annual wine exchange between wine bloggers worldwide, led by merry prankster Jeff Kralik, aka thedrunkencyclist.com.

Jeff and I know each other virtually through a mutual love for artisan wines, and I have on occasion participated in his Monthly Wine Writers Challenge. Where he finds the time to organize and oversee all these things while maintaining a Top 100 Most Influential Wine Blogs of 2015, coaching both sons’ basketball teams, doing math, and drinking wine is beyond me.

Anyway, back to Secret Wino. I brought my gift to a local wine bar that waives corkage for wines not on their prolific wine list. Santa’s wine was not.

While the dinner proved a fiasco (the kitchen just couldn’t wrap their heads around the concept ‘vegan’), the wine saved the evening.

According to Jeff, Pierre Legras ages some of his reserve wines in oak. Indeed. This delicate blanc de blanc pearled out ineffably effervescent, discretely dry, with a slight haunting of almond blossom. In short, quite the quaff. Santé, Secret Wino!
