Second Chance by 38 Special.

Is there anyone who hasn’t wanted a second chance? An opportunity to take back all the mistakes they made? Everyone has felt this way at one point or another. That’s what tonight’s song is about.

Second Chance was released as a single in February of 1989 from the band’s 9th album, Rock & Roll Strategy. It was their highest charting single in the United States taking #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #1 in Adult Contemporary, and #2 in Mainstream Rock. It also charted well in Canada, making #2.

The lyrics were written several years earlier, in 1983, by members Jeff Carlisi and Cal Curtis. During this time, the band had a different frontman (Don Barnes) who didn’t think the song fit their music style. Max Carl later took his place and re-worked the lyrics of Second Chance. It was originally entitled, “I Never Wanted Anyone Else But You.” Barnes thought the original lyrics described a guy who was a real jerk.
