Veteran actor Scott Foley was more than ready to jump head first into his new role on season 5 of True Blood. Foley plays Iraq war veteran – and friend of Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe) – Patrick Devins, whom we caught a glimpse of in the season 4 finale. If the rumors buzzing around are indeed true (and it sounds like they are), Foley’s character isn’t necessarily bringing a whole lot of love and happiness to Bon Temps. Patrick suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Foley himself has hinted that Patrick’s arrival on the scene doesn’t bode well for Terry. And if last week’s waiting sucks clip is any indication, he isn’t lying. Foley recently sat down with Alive Media Group to talk about his stint on True Blood, among life outside playing Patrick Devins.

Foley’s resume includes Felicity, Grey’s Anatomy, and Cougar Town, but he hasn’t always had the chance to play dark or sinister characters. For Foley, signing on to join the cast of True Blood wasn’t just about the possibility of playing a bad character:

“The way they film the show is really unique to me. I had only done network television before, and I always wanted to do a cable show. It’s such a huge cast, and it’s like shooting a big movie. Most television shows are shot in seven or eight days, but “True Blood” has the luxury and the budget to shoot each episode in about 20 days. They take their time and really focus on the characters and story, and that was important to me. Plus, I have a Southern accent in this role, which I’ve never done on-screen before, so it was a great chance for me to stretch my wings that way. It was the right part at the right time.”

One of the more humorous aspects of being on one of TV’s most popular series? The fan attention, which is something Foley hasn’t experienced in a while:

“When I booked the part, there was some news on it, and the girls at my local Starbucks—who hadn’t cared less that I was in every day before—freaked out. That hadn’t happened to me since “Felicity”—we’re talking 12 or 13 years now.”
