Scarlett Rambles - the Downside to Twitter

By Katyscarlett @_katyscarlett
Now before we start, I'm no expert on social media, this is merely my opinion.
Twitter is a fantastic thing. Its an online who's who's. Connecting you with people you wouldn't normally connect with. Helps you indulge in conversations about the things you love with like minded people. Its also amazing the destruction it can cause it just 140 characters.
Twitter reminds me of the days when I use to connect with people on MySpace, similar to Twitter, back then I really only knew about 10% of my 'friends' or 'followers' in real life, yet back then and still now, spent a large portion of my day on it, connecting with people. I remember back to MySpace when, you would trawl from profile to profile, looking at peoples page layout and design, but most importantly, their friend count. If they had a high friend count, and you wasn't on that list, you felt left out, not knowing what this person was posting everyday to create people to want to be their 'friend'. Things haven't changed much with Twitter either, you trawl through peoples profiles, adding brands, Pr companies, looking for people with a high follower count, as there must be a reason for it, and if you're not following you are obviously missing out on what that have to say in 140 characters.
Going back to my earlier point about the destruction Twitter can cause, everyone must have seen a certain high profile person in the news about their 'tweets' and how they were taken out of context. See, like I said Twitter is amazing, but has yet to produce the ability to show tone of voice, or to be able to portray humor. I have a very dry sense of humor and I'm very sarcastic, but if you are faced with me in public, you can hear my tone of voice, the slight smile on my face, and see my body language which all portrays that basically, I'm joking. Humour can easily being taken 'out of context' on Twitter, 'cause if the person doesn't receive the comment the way you meant for it to be, this can cause some offence, or in Twitters case, a spat. Where other people, your followers, thrive on the next tweet, "whats gonna happen now?" they are thinking with baited breathe, and even a few LOL's thrown in while watching. The other amazing thing, is that people never forget a Twitter spat. "OMG remember that time with so and so had a twitter spat with whats-er-name?!" which can be detrimental, especially if you are a brand, company or you use your Twitter for business and pleasure, I mean we all remember that certain company, that was bombarded with hate after her tweet about Little Mix's Jess being fat. People just don't forget. Though if your humor is taken in the right why, its good for people to remember.
Of course there are haters out there, they're lurking behind the screens of every social network platform, but I love them, because they prove how amazing Twitter actually is. We've all seen it on our time-lines, when one of the people we follow, retweets a nasty comment from someone, and we all jump on ship ready to defend their honour, make them feel better, to stand united, and to prove we don't take shit from no one.
So to close, Twitter may have lots of downsides, but the few up sides are worth it every time.
What are your thoughts on Twitter? I'd love to know!
