The one film festival I’ve waited has come! Few days ahead, you can expect me writing reviews on European movies screened at Europe on Screen 2013. The film festival will run 3-12 May 2013, in Indonesian big cities. I actually never thought I’d ended up watching a documentary, because usually it’s not my first choice. But it was the first day of festival, and I decided to see it because I chose the movie that was screened before evening. So you can imagine I have low expectation on seeing this film. photo Nickysfamily2011copy_zpsb5407d43.jpg  Nicky’s Family might started off with quite heavy background, with the World War II and their Nazi footage, but it’s actually focusing such selfless and noble Englishman, Nicholas Winton. This wealthy man organized the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children before the big war outbreak. Things was a mess back then, and children was nearly ignored and harmed.

There were many rescued children (already an adult) shared their stories, sometimes they inserted when the rescued children and Nicholas himself told the stories to school children and teens. They shared their fears while they were sent off to another country away from their parents. Between them, they also used illustration on how young Nicholas organizing his rescue and how a mother trying to get her kids away from the war. Nicholas’ kindness was nearly forgotten when his wife found out a scrapbook full of the children’s photos and information in their house.

Perhaps it was too long-winded in the front, but right when Nicholas story unveiled, it got quite moving and actually inspirational. The testimonials of the rescued children was filled with gratitude and joy, that Nicholas has saved them. And what’s more inspiring was, Nicholas never shared his help to anyone until his wife found the scrapbook. That’s one true hero, for sure. They also told how Nicholas spent his days now he’s 102 years old, but still have such high spirit on living. One act of kindness can spread to be a bigger positive movement.
