Red Sox Resign Dustin Pedrioa Through 2021

Via CBS:  “Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was already signed through next season with a club option for the 2015 season, but the Red Sox aren’t taking any chances in losing him anytime soon, because Rob Bradford of WEEI is reporting that the two sides have agreed to a contract extension. Specifically, Bradford reports that Pedroia has agreed to a seven-year extension worth $100 million.

The reported deal also includes a full no-trade clause, so it appears Pedroia is set to remain in a Red Sox uniform through the 2021 season.

Pedroia, 29, is hitting .308/.385/.422 with 25 doubles, six homers, 57 RBI and 58 runs this season. If not for some heavy hitters like Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis, Pedroia would likely be getting some pretty serious run for being on his way to a second MVP”

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today.   There was no way Pedroia was getting anywhere near $20 million annually to play 2B for the Red Sox. A shade under $15 million, I’ll take it.  This is a solid move by the Red Sox.

Sure people are going to point out that this contract will take him to age 38 (if my math is correct) but you know what, I’m still not mad.  What they did was lock up a top 3 second baseman for the rest of his prime and also during a time in which the Red Sox plan on being competitive.  This is an agreement that allows Pedroia to make a few extra bucks late in his career after taking, now two, really team friendly contracts.

According to Fangraphs he’s been worth $144.9 million in his career.  You know how much he’s made as a baseball player?  A shade over $30 mill.  Add the $100 million extension and the next two years, valued at $21 million and he’s still only up to $151 million total for his career.  He’ll top that probably by the end of this year.  Anyone who says this is a bad deal is straight crazy.

Good to know we’ll have our team leader on board for the next 9 years.
