While my friends in North America and the northern parts of Europe are posting pictures of snow, I’m posting pictures of rainbows. (There are two here, can you see both?) The internet could use more rainbows, if you ask me.
I had a peek through the archives, and I’ve only ever posted a handful of rainbow pictures — but it’s not for lack of trying! They are notoriously elusive to cameras, subject to fleeting conditions and following a bout of rain.
I took these pictures at Pico da Cruz, west of Funchal in Madeira. The island of Madeira has microclimates and fickle weather from October to March, registering more rainfall in December. (Porto Santo is much drier in winter, generally.) There’s a saying I’ve heard in lots of different places around the world — not always on islands but usually by the sea: “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” This definitely applies to Madeira, which experiences short downpours rather than constant rain, making it a prime location for rainbows. We saw a bunch during our visit, but I was lucky on Pico da Cruz and unlucky in Curral das Freiras and everywhere else.
