Rahul Gandhi

Born on 19th June, 1970, Rahul Gandhi belongs to one of the most prominent families in India. The Son of former Prime Minister of India, Late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and present president of the Indian National Congress, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi; Rahul Gandhi is the fifth generation of the Gandhi-Nehru family who is into politics.

He is a Member of Parliament from the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which is also the former constituency of Late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi. He is the General Secretary of INC and is also looking after the Indian Youth Congress and the National Student Union of India.

He did his schooling from St. Columbia’s School, New Delhi and from The Doon School in Dehradun. In 1989, he joined St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi for his Bachelor’s degree in the subject of History. Later on, he moved to Harvard University to complete his education. Although in 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, he left Harvard and moved to Rollin’s College under a pseudo identity of Rahul Vinci.

After graduation, Rahul Gandhi worked at a management consulting firm in London called the Monitor Group. Later on, He was one of the directors of Backops Services Private Ltd; a Mumbai based technology outsourcing firm.

A politician of the new age, he has adopted new approaches for connecting with people. In his constituency, he often visits common man’s houses without prior information and spends time with them, living their life and listening to their miseries. This approach has won him hearts among the masses; some people praise him for doing a faceoff with the reality while opponents label it as a publicity stunt.

Under the guidance of Rahul Gandhi, INC revived itself in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. He won the Amethi constituency with a massive margin of 333,000 votes. He was arrested on 11th May 2011 as he was going to meet the farmers in the village of Bhatta Parsaul. He was released after 3 hours and was taken back to Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi has a strong word on the Hindu Terrorism. In a wiki leaks cable, it was revealed that he told the US ambassador last year that the Hindu extremists are a lot more dangerous than Muslim militants as far as spreading of terrorism is concerned. This led to severe criticism by the opponents.

He advocated for the creation of Lok Pal as an autonomous constitutional body, similar to the election commission of India. However, this resolution is not passed by the Lok Sabha.

His party workers see him as a potential candidate for being the Prime Minister of India in future, but he never had shown any intentions or confirmations regarding the same. Also, he had kept media reporting totally away from his personal life.
