Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Melting Oils
Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Preparing Your Double Boiler

One more thing before we start, you should know, placing your oils and butter on direct heat can burn your oils. For a double boiler, you will need two pots. Fill one of your pots with water. Place this pot on the stove using low heat. Then, add your weighed out butters and oils to the second pot. Place the second pot in the first pot containing the water.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Melting Your Oils

Pumpkin-Sugar-Scrub-Recipe-Weighing-Oils
You will begin by weighing out the following, 136 grams Coconut 76 oil, 93 grams Sunflower Oil, 74 grams Cocoa Butter Golden Natural, 62 grams Shea Butter, 50 grams Silky Emulsifying Wax, 20 grams Meadowfoam Seed Oil, 20 grams Pumpkin Seed Oil,12 grams White Beeswax. Now, you should place these ingredients in your double boiler. Allow them to melt.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Preparing Your Colorants

While you are waiting for your oils to melt, you can go ahead and prepare your colorants. You will need three small mixing bowls. While we will also be using Natures Garden’s Neon Orange FUN Soap Colorant, this will not be needed until later in the recipe. For now, we will just be preparing the powders that are needed for coloring. Once you have prepared them, you can set them aside, we will come back to them.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Orange Layer
Bowl One: The Orange Layer

To your first mixing bowl, weigh out and add grams of orange peel powder. Then, to the powder, add 15 grams of vegetable glycerin. Now use one of your mixing spoons to stir the ingredients. You are looking for a paste like consistency. Just make sure you have removed any lumps in the powder. Creating a paste allows the powder to disperse better, or more evenly in your scrub.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Brown Layer
Bowl Two: The Brown Layer

In the second mixing bowl, weigh out and add 4 grams of your pumpkin pie spice blend. Again, add 15 grams of vegetable glycerin. You want to mix them again with a clean spoon to create a paste.

Bowl Three: The White Layer

To bowl three, we will just be weighing out the titanium dioxide. You simply need to weigh out two grams of titanium dioxide oil dispersible. Since we will be adding this to our oils, you do not need to create a paste with this one.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Adding Your Other Ingredients

Next, once your oils have melted, remove them from the heat. You will need to watch the temperature closely. This step is extremely temperature sensitive. The reason for this is, the optiphen. Optiphen is a preservative used to prevent bacteria in the scrub. While typically optiphen is only added to products that contain water, we chose to add it because scrubs tend to come in contact with a lot of water. It needs to be added at 120 degrees. If it is added at a higher temperature, above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, you will burn off the preservative. However, adding it below 120 degrees Fahrenheit will cause separation.

Once your oils reach the magic number of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, add the following ingredients, 18 grams Pumpkin Walnut Biscotti Fragrance Oil, 5 grams optiphen preservative, 5 grams vitamin E oil, and 15 grams arrowroot powder. Mix well to fully incorporate all of the ingredients.

Next, add your white granulated sugar. Mix thoroughly, incorporating the sugar completely into the oils. Then, divide the mixture into three equal parts. This will mean you will be adding approximately 394 grams of the mixture to two empty bowls, leaving the remaining in your current mixing bowl.

Now, let’s add some fun to the scrub! Colors! Remember those colorants we prepared earlier, this is when you will need them. Go ahead and get them. In your first bowl, add the titanium dioxide oil dispersible, this will be your white layer. Mix well to fully incorporate the powder. Now, to bowl two, add the pumpkin pie spice blend paste to your sugar mixture. Stir the paste into the sugar scrub until it is fully dispersed. Finally, to bowl the last powder add the orange peel powder blend, along with two drops of the neon orange Fun Soap Colorant. Again, mix well to incorporate the colorant evenly.

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Adding the Scrub to Your Jars

Pumpkin Sugar Scrub Recipe Layering
For the next portion of the pumpkin scrub recipe, you will need to allow the mixtures to come to room temperature. Also, be sure you do not see any oil sitting at the top of the product before moving to this step. Once you are ready, we will begin adding the sugar scrub to the jars. You will need seven four-ounce jars clear PET jars. Also, have seven 58/400 white dome lids ready.

We began layering our scrubs with the brown, pumpkin layer. However, you can begin with whatever color you choose. Another option would be to create more layers. While we only created three layers, you can make as many layers as you wish. So, here is how we created our layered scrub. You will begin by filling each of the seven jars 1/3 of the way full with the brown portion of the sugar scrub. Now, fill another 1/3 of the jar with the white portion of the scrub. Finally, top the jar off with the orange portion of the scrub. Once your jars are filled, whip away any residue on the jars. Then, place the white dome lids on top.
