Portugal’s Picturesque Northwest Corner

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

the view of Portugal's northwestern corner from Monte de Santa Tecla in Galicia

The top of Monte de Santa Tecla/Santa Trega in Galicia gives a fine view above the Minho River, Portugal’s northern border. From that vantage point 341m above sea level, we could see the beaches of Caminha, the little island of Ínsua (which has a fort), and further out to sea. To our left, towns flanked both sides of the river, clusters of white connected with snaking roads.

There’s also a castro (ancient settlement) on the mountain which was our main reason to make the ascent, but the castro deserves its own post. For now, just the views. There’s also a clip at the bottom of the post with views from the Portuguese side.

Here’s a clip of the view from the opposite site, a little further upriver, shot from Miradouro do Cervo above Vila Nova de Cerveira. The camera follows the Minho River from east to west out to sea. If you’re in this area, make the trip up the mountain for the panoramic views of both Portugal and Spain, only an hour north of Porto.
