Patrice: The movie (Hulu)- A Winning Documentary With A Heart Of Gold
Quick Take: It has been a minute, but when I saw this, the audio description track was FUBAR. I mentioned this, and an enterprising person let the producers of the film know, who responded basically with an apology and the fact that Hulu hadn’t responded to them. i don’t know if it has been fixed, but I loved Patrice either way. The movie centers around a disabled couple who just want to be able to put a ring on it, but due to current legislation, if they were to get married, they would lose their disability benefits. They are both disabled. Neither is wealthy. Even their cohabitation threatens their livelihood. It shines a light on how utterly fucked disabled Americans are, and how we allow assholes to control the narrative, believing that there are people gaming the system, and that the only way to keep out bad actors is to overcomplicate things for people who are actually disabled. People who by all definition could actually use the extra help. I’m glad this movie exists, it is one of my favorite documentaries of 2024. The audio description was corrupted, and often repeated itself. But, loved the film anyway. For more, check out my video.
