Outstandingly Visually Unique Movies Part II – The Top 6

Posted on the 10 February 2014 by House Of Geekery @houseofgeekery

A lot of people seemed to like my first post of visually cool movies, so I thought I’d showcase another lot of movies with stunning imagery.

House

House is a strange late 70s haunted house movie that I’d say is geared towards teenage girls… except it’s extremely gory and doesn’t make any sense. Every shot seems to have as many colours crammed into it as possible.

Days of Heaven

Every Terrence Mallick movie looks incredible (he’s next to only Tarkovsky in mastery of imagery for me), but I thought I’d go with Days of Heaven, even if it is a Richard Gere movie. The key to the beauty in this is that Mallick shot a lot in the incredibly small window of time when the sun was either rising or setting.

The Searchers

It has John Wayne and was shot in Monument Valley, maybe one of the most expansively beautiful places I’ve ever seen, I don’t need to say anything else.

Forbidden Planet

vlcsnap-2014-02-02-21h09m20s73

The first big blockbuster sci fi movie made by Hollywood, which paved the way for Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey and every other sci fi movie that came after. The special effects are still really impressive even today.

The Cell

vlcsnap-2014-02-02-21h16m02s250

Whoah, something modern, shocking I know. Director Tarsem Singh started making music videos (one of the scenes below looks very familiar…), and the story of entering a serial killers mind allows him to just go crazy with imagery.

2001: A Space Odyssey

I sure as hell wasn’t going to leave this off the list again. Just look at the pictures, and remember this was made in 1968.
