Gatchaman Crowds Episode 8

This image is just as funny out of context as it is in context

  • Last week, the Gatchaman learned just how powerful Berg-Katze really is, and Joe nearly lost his life when engaging Katze in battle.
  • Summary: With their identities in jeopardy and the planet in danger, the Gatchaman try to promote safety from Berg-Katze’s eventual rampage by going out to places in town and revealing themselves as the Gatchaman (with the exception of Joe). Meanwhile, people seem to be losing faith in the GALAX, and Berg-Katze has taken on the identity of Rui, and is using his identity to block the real Rui out of the GALAX network. Under Rui’s guise, Katze meets up with one of the former CROWDS who is very distressed and angry at Rui’s plan for the world. They make an agreement to form a new, perfect world. As a result of the recent fallout GALAX has taken on, the real Rui is shocked to hear people expressing their want to quit the social network, and that a rash of horrible things that have happened to people have been directly because of GALAX.

I don’t know why, but this image seems like it would be seen in some sort of slasher film

  • My Take: How is it that an episode that consisted almost entirely of “public relations/image building” could be so much fun? I especially like how there are moments where the media is put to shame with their constant “in your face” manner of getting a story. It’s understandable, but in context, it really shows just how obnoxious they can be. Basically, what I’m trying to say here is that episode 8 of Gatchaman Crowds is very simple and laid back, yet is still one of the most enjoyable episodes in the series so far. It’s at the point where the pacing of what we learn about the characters is perfect, and every episode gives you the sense that all of these people have even more interesting revelations in the next episode.

Wow! These are some sadistic kids!

  • We finally get to know a little about O.D! In the episode, he identifies himself as “half-human and half-alien”, and that his planet was supposedly destroyed by Katze. He even makes a great deal of signals in recent episodes about “when he’s gone”, signifying that the climax will have a lot to do with him.
  • I’m starting to dislike Rui, but I believe that’s the intent of the writers. In the beginning, he came across as a dreamer who had big plans for the world, but also had the means to satisfy his plans. Now, after losing so much of the support he originally had, he’s a total mess. So I dislike his character because as time goes on and on, he becomes more and more delusional. Now, we all know that he has good intentions. However, in his increasing madness, those intentions could become distorted. Also, his view on society is starting to alienate everyone around him. Former allies are fed up with his leadership style, and could very well become foes.
  • What ever happened to MESS? It’s just… gone.
  • Another admiration I have for this episode is Paiman. Oh, poor Paiman! We can all tell he wants to be a great leader, but we also know that he just isn’t a very effective leader. He even talks about his anxieties and insecurities as a leader when he confides in O.D (and those moments with O.D and Paiman throughout this series are some of my favorite scenes), so we get such a strong sense of where Paiman is coming from. I think we’ve all felt a little anxiety and insecurity when we’ve been given a responsibility that we feel we’re not up to fulfilling. So in those respects, Paiman is such a great, complex character.

I hadn’t noticed it until now, but after we see the form each Gatchaman takes on, it’s in the opening

  • Gatchaman Crowds, again, continues to impress me every week. Whether is being a lot of action or a lot of exposition, this series seems to be getting it right. I honestly can’t wait to see how all of this unravels in future episodes!
