No Girl – So, No Mother – Ultimately No Life – Save Girl Child Save World

By Vikasacharya

Girls' education is emerging as one of the top priorities of the international development community. Much progress has been made in recent decades. The number of girls attending school, even in the poorest countries, has grown rapidly in the past 40 years. Developed countries have achieved full equality of access to education .In India, most people are not aware of women's rights and thus they still think that girls are inferior to boys.

The birth of a girl is not desired. It goes to the extreme of taking away the life of female fetus which we are not supposed to do. The UNESCO studies show that the female literacy in the developed countries is 96 per cent, in developing countries 55 per cent. Education plays a major part in the development of a nation. Countries with high level of basic education do better economically. If India wants to be one of the developed nations it must concentrate on education and especially on female education. The root cause of all problems facing women is related to education. The status of the girl child is the key to achieving women's equality and dignity which is, in many ways, a litmus test of the maturity of a society. Girls are to be the future mothers besides future policy makers and leaders. The importance of women hardly needs emphasis. Woman is the mother of race and is the liaison between the generations.

Throughout history, men have traditionally been regarded as superior to women in both power and status. A common view in most societies was that daughters should obey their fathers and wives should obey their husbands, and this view still holds true in most Eastern countries. In today's society numerous women are becoming completely independent from men. Indian society, today, are becoming the most vulnerable section as far as their safety and security is concerned. When we turn the pages of a newspaper, we come across many headlines reporting cases of sexual assault, molestation, sexual harassment, rapes, trafficking, ill treatment of women in houses, violence against women in remote areas etc. Education, correct representation of women in media, transparency in social interaction of the two genders, liberal and accepting attitudes, and most importantly a speedy and strong justice system will go a long way in ensuring safety of girls in our country.

If a woman is happy, then the family is happy; when a family is happy, then society is happy. India is also home to one-third of the 10 million child brides in the world. When girls are forced to marry at 14 years and younger, they are physically, economically and sexually bound to strangers they have never seen. They have no voice or say in the matter, no negotiating power, and no rights of refusal or choice in their sexual relations with their new husband. Boys and young men must be educated in schools to value and respect women and girls, take responsibility for the increasing violence against girls, and respect girls' rights to their own bodies. Girls must be empowered by their education to speak up when they are abused, protest unwanted advances and protect themselves, and to demand their right to bodily integrity and respect in and outside of their homes. Educators must address communities and teach them to value their daughters for more than the sexual, domestic and reproductive labor they provide. Now is the time we should all wake up and interact with the girls all their rights and give them to live with dignity. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.
