Nightcrawler

Posted on the 16 February 2017 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton
Directed By: Tony Gilroy

Plot: Lou (Gyllenhaal) has no education, but a lot of drive. He can do any seedy job if he puts his mind to it. The job he chooses is to be a “nightcrawler”, a freelance photographer of crime scenes. He’s not afraid to do what it takes to get the best shot, to make the most money.

What Works: I’m so glad I finally saw this film. It’s an underseen masterpiece. Dan Gilroy has outdone himself here, as has Jake Gyllenhaal. I feel like I spend so many of my reviews talking about how underrated Jake Gyllenhaal is. Whether it is Nightcrawler, Demolition, or Southpaw, he seems to elude the Oscars. He is absolutely riveting in this role. The film would be great without the electric performance from Gyllenhaal. It is a great screenplay directed with high energy by Gilroy. Beautifully shot and executed. Also, Gyllenhaal isn’t the only great performance here. It was great seeing Rene Russo back in rare form. The scene at the restaurant where she’s being blackmailed was perfection.

What Doesn’t Work: Nothing. I loved this film.

Final Word: I can’t believe I waited this long to see this film. It’s a masterpiece. Easily one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

Final Grade: A
