The time has come once again to travel north, eat too many lobster rolls and bask in the incredible music coming from Ft. Adams State Park. After tackling some of the larger, wilder festivals earlier in the summer, Newport Folk Fest is always a welcome shift in energy. With its smaller attendance and much more relaxed atmosphere, NFF is one of the few music events that leaves its attendees feeling more refreshed and relaxed than when they arrived. There’s really nothing better than catching an amazing set backed by a field of sailboats.

(A-) Especially over the past several years, Newport Folk has excelled in bringing together artists that span generations and sub genres. While the emphasis is obviously always “folk,” that definition has become more fluid with time, and the festival has grown to attract a more varied audience. 2014 is no exception, with acts ranging from Ryan Adam’s headlining set to Sun Kil Moon and Jimmy Cliff.

This years headliners represent a fantastic collection of sounds. Ryan Adams, Jack White and Mavis Staples are masters within their realms of the folk world, and we’re equally excited for each.

Ryan Adams

From the release of Heartbreaker to his most recent singles, Ryan Adams has proven his songwriting prowess again and again. His live show may not be flashy, but the earnest way he delivers his lyrics brings new life to the songs and will make for the perfect soundtrack to everyone’s first night in Newport.

Jack White

No matter how many times you’ve caught his festival performances, there’s always room for more.

Nickel Creek

Following an excessively long absence, Nickel Creek have valiantly returned to bring us more of their beautifully woven songs. Though it’s been a while since I’ve seen them, the memories I have make one thing perfectly clear — this is definitely not a set to miss.

Deer Tick

If you weren’t lucky enough to nab a ticket to the nighttime performances, I have excellent news — you can see this incredible live band for free outdoors!

Jenny Lewis

With a new album out next week (her first in years), I feel like just about everyone I know has been talking about Jenny Lewis with heavy anticipation. With an inevitably great mix of old and new, her voice floating over the water definitely won’t disappoint.

Hozier

Simply put, Hozier’s vocals are some of the most powerful and emotive I’ve heard in quite some time. Add stellar songwriting to the equation, and you have a must-see performance.

Benjamin Booker

Benjamin Booker has been getting a lot of attention recently, and for very good reason. His songs are biting and raw, and his live show is no different.

Shakey Graves

Shakey Graves absolutely epitomizes the new feel of Newport. With a Texas folk sound, he delivers his songs in a way that’s absolutely mesmerizing. Definitely don’t miss this one!

Lucius

We talk about Lucius a lot (so apologies if this spiel has already been drilled into your head). This band has an immaculate live show. Everything from their matching outfits to the perfect blend of Jess and Holly’s vocals is precisely and delightfully executed.

PHOX

Another Wild Honey Pie favorite, PHOX have gained a huge amount of momentum recently. Catch their set to find out why!
