Movie Review – Coffee Town (2013)

By Manofyesterday

Director: Brad Copeland

Stars: Glenn Howerton, Steve Little, Ben Schwartz, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Groban, Josh Perry

Freelance website manager Will (Howerton) uses a nearby coffee shop, Coffee Town, as his office. When he finds that there’s a chance it’ll be changed into a bistro he enlists the help of his friends Chad (Little) and Gino (Schwartz) to stage a robbery, hoping that it will make the powers that be choose a different location.

This movie is really silly, quite stupid, and very funny. I was laughing out loud a lot. There are parts of the film that are really politically incorrect as well, so if that’s not your type of humor then you should avoid this. But I thought it had a lot of physical humor as well as sharp dialog. The dynamics between the characters worked well too and everything worked smoothly together.

At the start however it does feel like an empty film. The main thrust is that Will doesn’t want the coffee shop to change and it seems quite a selfish motive and a typical first world problem, and it’s tempting to say, ‘just get over it’. But later one we see that there is a deeper reason why he wants it to stay the same, but I think it would have helped the film if it were hinted at earlier.

The main plot is the robbery, and I liked how they planned it out and then everything didn’t go according to plan. I also liked the fact they used walkie-talkies that make you sound like Green Goblin and Spider-Man (although why Spider-Man would want to have a direct line where he could talk to Green Goblin I don’t know) and I really want to own them.

The other main story thread is Will’s crush on fellow frequent customer Becca (Palicki). I thought they had good chemistry and Palicki was entertaining, but I think the character did veer too much into being a quirky perfect match for Will, and her only function in the plot was as a love interest for Will. I would have liked it had she played a part in the robbery as well.

Overall though it’s a solid comedy that had me laughing throughout. I loved how the main three characters interacted and this is one that I’m recommending people check out.
