Mountain Traffic In Madeira

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

mountain traffic, Madeira

One of the major differences between the Portuguese islands of Madeira and São Miguel, 954 kilometres northwest in the Azores, is the cow population. (Case in point: when you buy milk or cheese in Madeira, chances are it’s Azorean.) We had just one encounter with cows in Madeira and it took several days of driving around, while São Miguel is an island of cows with some humans.

That said, our one encounter with cows in Madeira took place high up in the peaks, where they could have used a reminder to stop leisurely hogging the lanes. In the first video, you can hear me telling the cow to pick a lane. Check out that withering look I got in return…

This second video is very short but it shows the surroundings better, in terms of how high we were. I also thought the accompanying music of Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” was perfect for the occasion.
