Midnight Shine Returns with Northern Man

Posted on the 08 October 2014 by Hendrik Pape @soundcheckblg

Back in May we discovered Canadian rockers Midnight Shine by accident.  We are happy to announce that they are back with  hot new single and a new album loaded with music that will all but certainly get stuck in your head.

Since our discovery last year their label, Roar Records, out of Toronto has done a fantastic job at keeping us in the loop on what these boys from Northern Ontario have been up to.  They spent the winter recording and much of the summer putting the finishing touches on ‘Northern Man’ which was finally released to iTunes on October 3.

Northern Man, recorded this past winter and spring at Noble Street Studios, is a tour de force. The song Over You is the band’s follow-up single to Since You Been Gone (SYBG) which broke the Top 200, hitting the 170 mark on the Rock Charts, this past June, with spins across the nation, from coast-to-coast.

Alan Cross, A Journal of Musical Things, picked SYBG as one of his Top 11 playlist, for the week of April 11, 2014, citing the band’s “rootsy rock-pop lead by Adrian Sutherland, from Attawapiskat and backed by a full First Nations Band.”

Not to be labelled one dimensional, Midnight Shine pushed the creative envelope with their second album, Northern Man. (Yes, those are timpani drums one can hear on Over You) Working once again with producer Douglas Romanow, this album commands the listener to stay tuned.

Over You is a catchy, feel-good song that resonates with listeners of all ages. The song’s upbeat tempo grabs one at the first beat; the lyrics send a positive message that is both thoughtful and tongue ‘n cheek. “I just had to shake it off, because my best days are still ahead of me …” sings Adrian.

The album Northern Man features haunting lyrics and vocals, including the anthem Northern Man – a tribute to the band’s home and culture. This song is destined to become their “trademark” anthem.

With thanks to Veronica at Roar Records I’ve had the pleasure of listening to Northern Man, almost on steady repeat in the car and in the office, since late September.  Northern Man is a phenomenal followup to their self titled debut album and although loaded with 11 killer tracks one track that I can’t seem to get out of my head, and hopefully their next single (I think this one has hit written all over it) is the third track on the album “Let Me Go”.  Here is an exclusive listen to the track, if you like it click on the shopping card to go to iTunes and buy it.
