I’ve noticed that I often compare music to water, and whether it’s clear, crisp, flowing, or fluid, I can’t help but go back to H2O when it comes to Mean Lady’s brand new song, “Far Away”. Opening with a waterfall that lands in a whirlpool, the swelling, reverb-draped vocals, piano, strings, synths, and bells all fall around each other within a brilliantly displayed waltz time signature. The process is so carefree yet meticulous, you can’t help but get lost in the layers upon layers of gorgeous drone. After switching to a more familiar and bouncy 4/4 time, the band introduces a reverb-smacked beat, jubilant piano line and some distant cooing vocals, turning the song on its head. The languid, seeping blur becomes a tight, poppy, Vampire Weekend-esque jam, with some high pitched background ambiance reminiscent of the brighter moments on Passion Pit’s debut album.

The first verse brings in Katie Dill’s voice, one that could carve out mountainsides. Sharp and expressive, Dill’s vocals and harmonies are complimented by syncopated, plinky piano chords. Dill sings of calling to someone from a distance, and while the song may be about waiting and wishing, the sounds are all very immediately enjoyable and catchy. Dill’s harmonies grow more lush as the track progresses, and this simple synth pop gem blooms with a wordless chorus that slowly evaporates into the original atmospheric haze.

This song captures the essence of the tide, rushing out with the beautiful instrumental intro section, rushing in with the catchy, synth laden middle, and rushing out again as the song devolves back into ambiance. Watch out for Mean Lady’s debut album July 23rd via Fat Possum, because if it’s anything like this song, we’re all in for a real treat.
