I have worn them for different reasons throughout the years - to cover up a tummy, warmth, or just to add a little flavor to an outfit. I have an entire box under my bed full of them...some over 10 years old and from all over the world as I tend to pick one up everywhere I travel as a reminder of my time there.
Frankly, autumn would not be the same without me wrapped up in a scarf - I just couldn't do it. I think it's also a safety blanket of sorts...it gives me comfort and security.

The luxuriously printed rayon scarf I have has an elephant pattern that symbolizes good luck, happiness and longevity - hey, I'll take some of that!
