On July 7th, 2012, Donnie Yen made his very first North American appearance at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) to promote The Lost Bladesman, a movie based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The story focuses on the character Guan Yu and his attempt at crossing the five passes and slaying six generals. Guan Yu is known as the Chinese God of War. Due to his ferocious fighting style, any faction that had him on their side would have a big chance at victory and control China’s empire. Guan Yu’s alliance is tested in this movie between his sworn brother, Liu Bei, and the opposing warlord Cao Cao, who has granted Guan Yu the title of Marquis of Hanshou. If you’ve been to any Chinese establishment, you may find his statue lying about where he holds a very big spear and has a beard longer than the height of his body.

I was very fortunate to be able to attend the screening of The Lost Bladesman, amongst 200 other attendees. Very enthusiastic fans were awaiting the arrival of the star and Donnie got a standing ovation when he entered the stage for the very first time. During his introduction to the movie, Donnie talked a little bit about his preparation for his role in this movie. A role which he claims is one of his most difficult ones to prepare. After the movie there was a short Q&A with Donnie where he talks about the movie and a few questions the fans had about his career.

Below are some videos of Donnie Yen at the NYAFF 2012 as well as a trailer for The Lost Bladesman
