Jim Beam Repeal Batch Bourbon Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

To celebrate 85 years of boozy freedom Jim Beam is taking their classic Jim Beam White and bottling it at 3% higher ABV, not chill-filtering it and calling it Jim Beam Repeal Batch Bourbon. Before, and directly post, prohibition the practice of chill-filtering wasn’t really a thing so they’re delivering it in that style.

The simple acts of adding less water and leaving all the natural oils have a noticable effect on what normally gets bottled. The only way to make it even better would be to up the proof a bit more and age it for a bit longer… which is exactly what Booker’s Bourbon is. So I guess they’re already doing it… anyways, on to the review!

In Jim Beam’s Words: Jim Beam Repeal Batch Bourbon

For the 85th anniversary of Repeal Day, we wanted to release a bourbon inspired by our heritage and dedicated to the hard work my great-grandfather put into rebuilding our family business after Prohibition,” said Fred Noe, Jim Beam’s seventh generation master distiller. “Jim Beam Repeal Batch pays tribute to all the generations of Beams that came before me.

Jim Beam Repeal Batch Bourbon Review: OVERALL

Love the label, bottle, the disclaimer about potential cloudiness due to being non-chill filtered, the idea behind the Jim Beam Repeal Batch Bourbon; everything. Jim Beam, and the industry as a whole, needs to do more bottlings like this. The only thing I’d really change about this is bringing the proof up to 46%, but since that’s not the old proof they used it would miss that historical nod.

The aroma is sweet with nice layers of corn and lighter sweets (honey, vanilla, etc.). The palate is a tad darker and complex, but with a similar overall profile and the finish is a good end note. As it opened I noticed a bit of char and copper developing.

Though, the most interesting thing was the lack of a yeasty profile I often get with the lower proof Jim Beams. It’s something I never get in Booker’s or Knob Creek single casks and I’m not getting it in this. Makes me wonder if it’s a result of the chill-filtering… Anyways, I love what’s happening here and I’m itching to try it out in a cocktail to see how it plays there too. Cheers!

SCORE: 84/100 (B)
